I have struggled greatly with my decision to post this, because well, it is not easy to admit I was duped. For a long time I was a fan of a certain online educator. I had all her books. I listened to her Podcast religiously. I listened as she gave me marriage advice. Now, I am watching for the sidelines as the perfect coil of life she presented to us unravels. It wasn't real. I've also come to see that she shamed a lot of people & I did not even realize it at the time, because I looked up to her. I wanted to be who she was- a successful, rich, women of faith with a seemingly story book sort of life & perfect marriage. What I found out is that she placed her greed over her husband and she is not who she appears to be. She sold marriage courses to women for thousands of dollars, knowing that her own was in shambles. I listened as she made me feel "less than" because I don't share her same energy level and my life is not perfectly polished. I listened and I struggled to be who she said I should be because I bought into the smoke & mirrors. No More!!!
Today, I am here to tell you to be careful who you make your hero. Don't choose a women you don't even know, because it could all be lies.
I am making a conscious choice to make the REAL WOMEN OF BALTIMORE my heroes. Those who work hard, are strong in their values and would choose family over greed any day. Those who don't make me feel like I am less because I don't hit the gym everyday or have a perfectly posh home. Those who are not afraid to admit they struggle & life isn't always great, because they are REAL. They are what a women looks like. They are who she is. She has off days. She works her tushy off. She prays for strength more than she'd ever like to admit. She keeps her chin up & no matter what, she still keeps going. Her life isn't perfect, but its beautiful nonetheless.
From Now On...
I choose women like Sonsy Gabba to be my hero. A women who NEVER gave up on her son, no matter how bleak the future might have looked. A women who raised her son Mo to have the sweetest, most kind, most loving heart a child could have, no matter what he faced. A women whos strength can not even be measured. May Mo rest in peace. I hope Sonsy knows that a chunk of Baltimore's heart left this world with him.
I choose gals like Mindy W, the director of HEART, a Maryland based Siberian Husky Rescue. She adopted a son with Cystic Fibrosis without a second thought, and has loved and cherished every moment with him since. She spends all of her free time saving animals. She loves hard & works even harder, but isn't afraid to admit when life isn't perfect, because she is a REAL WOMAN. She is not smoke & mirrors on the internet.
I choose people like my client Nadine who is half way across the world from our family serving her country. Her strength amazes me. I can't fathom how hard it must be to be away from your child & your soul mate. She gets up everyday, puts on a brave face & does what is asked of her by our country. All the while, counting down the days until she can hold her son again because a mother's love knows no distance.
I choose the nurses who put themselves on the front lines of COVID-19 to protect complete strangers even when their innate urge is to protect their own.
I choose the educators who mold and shape the minds of tomorrow.
I choose to lady firefighter who runs into a burning house when she is needed, because her bravery is so inspiring.
I choose women like Donna Scott who has raised her son Brandon Scott to care about his city, to work for change, to work for a better tomorrow & to do it all the right way, despite having little money or means. She fought for her son to have better education, a better place to live & a better life. In turn, he is fighting for all of Baltimore to have a better life.
I choose women like my most recent client Erika, who doesn't let her mobility issues slow her down. She wears a beautiful smile on her face & makes the most out of life. She is passionate, sassy, has a zest for life & most of all, is a women who values family most over anything.
